DESCRIPTION:We are calling upon all who love the ancestors\, Creation\, Mother Earth & her waters to support a Four-Day Ceremony taking place simultaneously on the north and south shores of the Straits of Mackinac–the Heart of Turtle Island. This ancestral-\, heart- & spirit-driven movement was inspired by the people & their words during a Line 5 meeting hosted by Gnoozhekaaning (Bay Mills Indian Community) on July 1. Megwetth to our Gnoozhekaaning relatives for their leadership & bringing the people together to protect our ancestors & waters. \nProtected under the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978\, this gathering will include sacred fires\, daily ceremonies\, feasts\, teachings\, and offerings made for the water\, our ancestors\, our people\, and all of Creation. \nLodge building will take place Monday through Wednesday\, September 29 – October 1\, with sacred firelighting and the first sunrise ceremony on Thursday\, October 2. The ceremony will continue through Sunday\, October 5. For those who are able to stay\, cleanup will take place Sunday\, October 5 – Monday\, October 6. \nThere are many ways to help—tending fires\, preparing food\, carrying wood\, and simply being present in a good way. We are also inviting relatives to consider making a financial contribution to help cover food\, firewood\, and other ceremonial needs. \nChi Miigwech for your support in whatever way you are able to give or be present. DESCRIPTION:Last month’s gathering included learning about how to help survey the proposed Line 5 reroute areas for threatened\, endangered\, and non-native species. As a follow-up\, some folks are organizing a Community Float event on Saturday\, July 26th on one of the waterways that would be affected by the reroute project within the Bad River watershed. There will also be fliers for going door-to-door canvassing to folks who live along the construction corridor and along the rivers we hope to float survey on. To commemorate the anniversary we will display a portion of the over 30 thousand origami fish submissions that un-o-FISH-ally  broke a world record! Thanks to the creativity and dedication of people from across the country\, each folded fish is a symbol of our shared commitment to protect the Great Lakes and shut down Line 5.\nTogether with the Kalamazoo River Watershed Council\, we’ll paddle the impacted section of the Kalamazoo River\, reflect on the impacts of the 2010 spill\, and recommit to protecting our Great Lakes from future harm.\nJoin us Saturday\, July 26th\, 2025\, as we Kanoe the Kazoo!\n9 am – 1 pm: Kanoe the Kazoo– A scenic paddle down a 7-mile stretch of the Kalamazoo River– Free kayak rentals available with RSVP*\n1 pm – 3 pm: Gathering at Historic Bridge Park featuring– Live music from local artists– Free food from a local food truck– Speakers demanding the shutdown of Enbridge’s Line 5Pipeline– A powerful display of the Fish for the Future origami fish\nThis event is open to paddlers of all experience levels—whether you bring your own kayak or reserve one of ours.
